Rolf Sohre

Cinematographer Rolf Sohre was born on June 11, 1928 in Dresden. He was influenced by his father, a projectionist who later ran his own movie theater, as well as his uncle, who owned a photo studio. In 1951, Sohre began as an assistant cameraman at a little film studio in Dresden. From 1954 to 1960, he worked on over forty productions at the DEFA Studio for Popular Science Films in Potsdam-Babelsberg. His first feature film, Der Mord an Rathenau (Dir. Max Jaap), was made for East German television.  Sohre’s extraordinary expressionist black-and-white photography in Das zweite Gleis was praised by film critics. His exceptional talent was again demonstrated in Die Abenteuer des Werner Holt, a narrative feature that continues to be popular to this day. Photography remains Rolf Sohre’s enduring passion. He lives in Nuthethal near Potsdam. (Source: DEFA Film Library)
